Boat Mart - The Waypoint

Online Berth Booking

A new berth vacancy management system is due to go live on the 7 December. Called ‘The Waypoint’, the new software is a web-based booking system designed to help marinas make the most out of their berthing space.

The system requires a marina to invest in the system and then encourage their bertholders to sign up. Marinas will then be automatically updated when a participating bertholder leaves the marina and their space becomes free. The marina can then rent out the free berth for the duration of the resident vessel being away.

The Waypoint includes the facility for boat owners to pay for their berth over a secure online system. The software will also include passage-planning tools, the ability to advertise your berth far in advance and access to mooring directories. An ‘app’ should be released in January 2011 to optimise the software for smart phones.

The software is free for marinas for the first year and completely free to boat owners, though a ‘premium’ service also exists to the latter at £50 per year. The premium service ideally sees boat owners making some money back on their berth being rented out. However, it is up to the marinas, not Waypoint, how much the owners will receive – and that could be nothing at all. Founder Charles Bacon has said there is ‘significant interest’.
